Ever feel like you’re stuck in a mental loop of doubt, fear, or exhaustion? Like no matter how hard you push, your mind keeps telling you: You’re not going to make it.
I was reminded of this during my recent 100-mile race at Orcas Island. It wasn’t just physically tough, it was a battle of the mind.
At one point, I was throwing up, depleted, and chasing cutoffs.
My mind was screaming:
❌ You’re moving too slow.
❌ You’re too far behind.
❌ It’s impossible.
BUT I know there is always something we can do, and there is always 60% left in the reserve (the famous rule of the Navy SEALs reminds us that when you think you’re done, you’ve only used 40% of your potential ). There is more.
So, I Did Something Different 😎
👉 I asked for help.
A complete stranger & an angel jumped in to pace me, and I started saying to myself:
💥 I feel great! I have energy!
Even though it felt like a complete lie at first, I kept saying it until I believed it. That’s how you flip the script and rewire your subconscious.
🔥The Moment Everything Changed
I allowed myself to feel the frustration. I even cried on one of the climbs. Then, at an aid station, two people shifted everything for me:
✅ A guy told me he was also really nauseous and had barely made the cutoffs last year but still finished. In that moment, I thought: If he could do it, so could I.
✅ Another racer gave me something to help my stomach, looked me in the eye, smiled, and said, “See you at the finish line”, with such confidence.
🔥 Her confidence became my confidence.
🔥 In that moment, I threw off the dark metaphorical sunglasses I was wearing and put on a big, bright pair of rose-colored glasses.
This is when I came ALIVE again! 🤩💫
I started shouting:
“Lets go! Let’s get to that finish line!”
“Oh yeahhh! We got this!”
“WOOHOO!”
⚡️ Energy is contagious. The shift was instant.
Your Subconscious Mind Shapes Reality!
I came to the last stretch of the race and the hardest climb. A new pacer jumped in and gave me two powerful mindset shifts:
✅ Envision a rope pulling you up the mountain. My body followed my mind.
✅ Embrace the weather. It started getting rainy and windy. I noticed my pacer was enjoying the wind and the rain, so I stopped resisting and started embracing it too. Instead of seeing the storm as something to be upset about, I became the storm 🌪️.
I felt the strong wind and shouted:
“I AM THE STORM! WOOHOO!” 👊🏻😆
I kept laughing, shouting, and splashing through the mud.
I let go of suffering. I embraced Mother Nature and her storm. Suddenly, my energy, confidence, and endurance skyrocketed. I took my power back!
Then Something Wild Happened!
My last pacer kept saying how fast and strong I was moving. Truthfully, I don’t know if I was moving that well, but I started moving better.
That’s the power of mindset, belief and energy! I ran strong. I knew I was going to make it. And I did!
I ran into that finish line shouting happily and in great spirits.
A moment of darkness had turned into a moment of light and pure joy. And if I can do it, so can you!
It’s Amazing How Powerful Perspective Really Is! And yet, it’s so under-utilized.
Lessons to Shift Your Mindset:
We’re not meant to do this alone. In nature, trees share nutrients through their roots; humans do the same . Lean on your community.
I had three amazingly positive people pace me and it changed everything. Borrow confidence from others until you find your own.
Perspective rewires your subconscious. Your mind controls your experience. If you focus on suffering, you’ll suffer. Shift your focus, and your body will follow.
You CAN rewire your subconscious for success.
You are never stuck. Shift your mindset to match the outcome you truly want. That’s the key to getting what you actually desire.
